Bomod‑Ok Falls
Have you ever wondered what’s waiting at the end of a winding mountain trail through rice terraces and forested paths? Our latest blog post, Bomod‑Ok Falls, takes you straight there — to one of Sagada’s most breathtaking natural treasures.
The Journey & The Falls
Bomod‑Ok Falls, affectionately called the "Big Falls," plunges nearly 200 feet into a cool, emerald basin below. Nestled among Sagada’s terraces and tucked between towering cliffs, this hidden waterfall boasts serene beauty and refreshing immersion that reward every step of the trek.
The adventure begins with a shared jeepney ride to Barangay Banga‑an, where your trek starts through the village and down sturdy concrete stairs into a landscape of rice paddies and local life. The hike is beginner-friendly, though the return climb is steep and definitely a workout.
Trail Highlights & Village Encounters
Along the journey, you’ll pass through Fidelisan and Pide villages, where a community’s daily life unfolds amid terraces laden with vegetables and stories. Locals still tend these fields like their forebears, adding layers of human warmth to the landscape. Friendly reminders: wear proper footwear and tread carefully—those slippery rocks are no joke.
What to Expect at the Falls
Arriving at Bomod‑Ok Falls is nothing short of stunning. A towering cascade crashing into crystal waters, it’s a photographer’s dream and a nature lover’s sanctuary. Brave souls may dip into the refreshing basin—or even leap from small cliffs into its depths—but always mind the currents and err on the safe side.
Planning Your Visit
Best Time to Visit: Dry season (November–April) offers safer trails and clear views.
Costs & Logistics: Expect small fees: tourist registration (₱100), minimal entrance charges (₱10), and group guide rates (~₱300–₱500 per group).
Trail Overview : The out-and-back hike covers ~4–5 miles round-trip, with around 2–3 hours each way depending on pace.
Essential Gear: Comfy hiking shoes, sunscreen, spare clothes for swimming, water bottle, and, of course, your camera.
Why Bomod-Ok Should Be on Your Bucket List
Bomod-Ok Falls is more than just a natural spectacle—it’s a journey through culture, challenge, and stunning landscapes. Each step on the trail builds anticipation, and each view there reminds you why Sagada continues to enchant travelers with its quiet majesty.
Don’t just read about it — experience the climb, the splash, the serenity.

Danajon Bank – The Philippines' Remarkable Double Barrier Reef

Hidden beneath the turquoise waters off northern Bohol lies a rare geological wonder and ecological treasure: the Danajon Bank, home to the Philippines’ only double barrier reef. In our latest blog post, Danajon Bank, we dive into what makes this reef so extraordinary, why it's vital to marine life, and the collaborative efforts underway to protect it.
A Rare Reef Under the Philippine Sea
Danajon Bank stretches across 272 square kilometers in the Camotes Sea and stands as one of just six double barrier reefs worldwide—and the only one in Southeast Asia. Formed over thousands of years, two parallel coral ridges developed over a submerged ridge through the unique interplay of tidal currents and coral growth.
These twin ridges cradle rich underwater ecosystems—spawning grounds, nurseries, and migration routes linked to marine species from coral to seagrass inhabitants.
A Hub of Marine Biodiversity
This reef system is a hotspot for marine life. Surveys reveal:
211 species of hard corals
Endangered marine creatures like seahorses
An array of fish such as angelfish, wrasses, and parrotfish
Sponges, sea fans, and significant seagrass coverage
Its extensive mangroves and seagrass beds also provide food and habitat for crustaceans, shrimp, sea cucumbers, and more. The reef’s health is essential to local communities that rely on it for seafood and income.
Environmental Pressures & Conservation Measures
Despite its ecological wealth, Danajon Bank faces severe threats:
Overfishing and destructive practices like blast and cyanide fishing
Pollution and habitat degradation
In response, over 30 marine protected areas (MPAs) have been designated to safeguard reefs. Additionally, the Danajon Bank Double Barrier Reef Management Council—comprising national and local governments—now stewards protection efforts, with an aim to formally include the reef in the National Integrated Protected Areas System (NIPAS) for stronger legislative backing.
The Reef’s Role in Community and Economy
Danajon Bank supports nearly 5,000 commercial fishers and over 125,000 municipal fishers from its surrounding municipalities, making it a lynchpin of both livelihood and cultural identity for coastal communities.
Its ecological and economic significance extends beyond the sea—sustainable protection promises resilience, tourism development, and food security.
Why Danajon Bank Matters
This unique reef is not just a natural marvel—it’s a lifeline and—a testament to biodiversity, resilience, and the urgent need for unified conservation.

Siquijor’s New Marine Sanctuary — A Victory for Community and Conservation

We’re celebrating an inspiring conservation milestone: after nearly two decades of dedicated community advocacy, the Philippines has formally designated the Bitaug Marine Protected Area (MPA) off Siquijor—a powerful testament to the transformative potential of local-led stewardship.
A New Sanctuary at Sea
Located off the coast of Enrique Villanueva in Siquijor Province, the Bitaug MPA spans approximately 149 hectares (around 370 acres), making it the largest marine protected area in Siquijor to date. The protected zone includes a 44-hectare core area and a 105-hectare buffer zone.
Why It Matters Ecosystem-Wise
Bitaug is a biodiversity hotspot, safeguarding a range of critical marine habitats, including climate-resilient coral reefs, seagrass meadows, and nesting grounds for sea turtles and vital species like sharks and rays. Importantly, fishing for sharks and rays is prohibited—except for scientific research—making Bitaug among the few MPAs in the country with explicit protections for these vulnerable species.
The People Behind the Progress
The push for Bitaug began all the way back in 2007. Local leaders, fisherfolk, and civil society groups kept the dream alive through a marine sanctuary advocacy revival in 2017. With ecological validation from UP–MERF, WCS, and partner agencies, and with surveys confirming biodiversity stakes, the long search culminated in official legal designation and co-management with the Bitaug Fisherfolk Association (BitFA) and local government.
Othello Manos, president of BitFA, reflected warmly:
“This is the beginning of what we’ve been dreaming of for almost eighteen years.”
Bitaug’s management plan embraces sustainability and inclusivity: eco-tourism activities like snorkeling and diving are allowed—but with fair revenue-sharing that feeds directly back to local conservation efforts.
This achievement was made possible through the synergy of many: BitFA, Siquijor State College, DENR, BFAR, and WCS Philippines all played instrumental roles. Their collaboration serves as a blueprint for other coastal communities embarking on marine protection journeys.
A Beacon for the Seas
Bitaug MPA stands as a powerful symbol of community resilience, environmental justice, and shared responsibility for our coastal ecosystems.
Let’s honor this achievement by embracing the message it carries—our natural treasures thrive when we work together to protect them.
