Mount Kanlaon - Navigating Nature's Majesty Amidst Volcanic Activity

Mount Kanlaon, the highest peak in the Visayas at 2,465 meters, stands as a testament to the Philippines' dynamic geological landscape. Straddling Negros Occidental and Negros Oriental, this active stratovolcano has long captivated adventurers and nature enthusiasts alike.

Recent Volcanic Activity

On May 13, 2025, Mount Kanlaon experienced a moderately explosive eruption, sending ash plumes approximately 4.5 kilometers into the sky. The eruption produced pyroclastic density currents that descended the southern slopes up to 2 kilometers from the crater. Ashfall affected multiple barangays, and sulfur dioxide emissions peaked at over 5,000 tonnes per day. 

In response, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) maintained Alert Level 3, indicating a high likelihood of further moderate eruptions. A 6-kilometer Permanent Danger Zone (PDZ) around the summit remains strictly off-limits. 

Trekking and Trails

Mount Kanlaon offers several trails for hiking enthusiasts:

• Mapot-Masulog Trail: A three-day trek that takes hikers through Makawiwili Peak, Pagatpat Ridge, and Margaja Valley.

• Guintubdan-Wasay Trail: Known for its challenging terrain and scenic views, this trail passes through dense forests and hot springs.

However, due to the current volcanic activity, all trekking activities are suspended until further notice.

Biodiversity and Natural Beauty

Beyond its volcanic features, Mount Kanlaon is home to diverse flora and fauna. The surrounding natural park boasts lush forests, endemic wildlife, and picturesque landscapes, making it a haven for ecotourism.
