Manila Central Post Office – Heritage, Resilience, and Restoration

Nestled at the northern edge of Liwasang Bonifacio and overlooking the Pasig River, the Manila Central Post Office stands as a magnificent symbol of both architectural prowess and historical resilience. In our latest blog post, Manila Central Post Office, we explore how this landmark blends functionality, heritage, and national memory.
Architectural Grandeur Rooted in Vision
Designed by the Philippines' celebrated architects Juan M. Arellano, Tomás Mapúa, and American Ralph Doane, the Manila Central Post Office was completed in February 1928. It’s a neoclassical masterpiece featuring 16 Ionic columns, a commanding façade, and elegant semi-circular wings framing the entrance—all reflecting the ordered beauty of Greco-Roman design.
Its placement along the Pasig River was part of Daniel Burnham’s urban vision: the river served as a key artery for mail delivery, while intersecting avenues ensured easy land access.
A Witness to History and Rebirth
This building is deeply intertwined with the Philippines’ tumultuous past. Damaged extensively during the Battle of Manila in World War II, it was restored in 1946, with much of its original beauty retained.
In a devastating turn of events, a fire in May 2023 gutted the structure from basement to roof, destroying valuable archives, stamps, and portions of the interior. Yet, the government, architects, and cultural institutions rallied swiftly—pledging restoration funding and reaffirming the building’s irreplaceable cultural value. Restoration efforts began in late 2023 and carry a projected completion date in 2026.
Continuing Its Role in Public and Postal Life
More than an architectural gem, the building serves as the operational heart of the Philippine Postal Corporation (PHLPost), handling nationwide mail sorting, distribution, and postal ID services. The esteemed edifice also houses the philatelic section—keep an eye out for stamp exhibitions that celebrate the art and history of communication.
Why This Landmark Matters
Cultural Legacy: Recognized as an Important Cultural Property, it represents the nation's rich architectural heritage and urban history.
Resilience & Renewal: Survivability through war, fire, and time reflects a deeper narrative of national fortitude.
Community and Continuity: A working postal hub, a heritage site, and a cornerstone of Manila’s urban landscape—its presence connects past, present, and future.
Visiting Tomorrow Begins Today
While restoration is in progress, the building remains a powerful touchstone for history and design. When complete, it promises to return as both a living civic space and a heritage monument.

Tucked within the scenic ridges of Negros Oriental lies a crystalline sanctuary waiting to be discovered: Lake Balinsasayao, part of the Balinsasayao Twin Lakes Natural Park. Our latest blog, Lake Balinsasayao, reveals why this tranquil haven remains a true bucket-list destination for nature lovers and eco-conscious travelers.
Twin Lakes, Towering Heritage
Lake Balinsasayao and its smaller twin, Lake Danao, rest at an elevation of approximately 1,000 meters above sea level—crater lakes resting in the caldera of the Mount Talinis range. They’re separated by a slender ridge and surrounded by four volcanic peaks: Mahungot, Kalbasan, Balinsasayao, and Guintabon.
This 8,016-hectare park, spanning the towns of Valencia, Sibulan, and San Jose, was officially designated a protected natural area in 2000. In 2024, it earned a spot among the ASEAN Heritage Parks—highlighting its rich biodiversity and conservation significance.
Nature’s Rich Tapestry
Balinsasayao Twin Lakes serves as a thriving repository of ecological diversity. It supports:
Over 237 plant species, including rare dipterocarp trees and ferns
114 bird species, from vibrant sunbirds to the endangered Negros bleeding-heart pigeon, Visayan wrinkled-billed hornbill, and more
The area’s lush rainforest is considered the last remaining forest on Negros Island, preserving life forms found nowhere else.
Your Lake Balinsasayao Experience
Boating & Kayaking: Gentle paddles across the lake—boat rides are available at around ₱250/hour and kayaks at ₱150/hour
Hiking & Ecotrails: Short, guided trails wind through the forest, offering wildlife glimpses and panoramic views
Picnicking & Camping: Enjoy the serene ambiance with lunch and quiet reflection by the water. Overnight camping is possible with proper gear
Guided Tours: For a hassle-free visit, local tours provide transport, boating, meals, and knowledgeable guides
Planning Tips for Your Visit
Entrance Fee: Around ₱50 for locals, ₱100 for foreign visitors
Getting There: About an hour from Dumaguete City via bus or habal-habal (motorcycle taxi)
Best Season: Visit during the dry months—November to May—for clear vistas and smooth trail conditions
Why Lake Balinsasayao Matters
Lake Balinsasayao is more than just natural beauty—it’s a living classroom, ecological haven, and a sanctuary for biodiversity. Protecting this place supports endangered species, preserves vital watershed ecosystems, and preserves a peaceful retreat for the soul.
When you choose Balinsasayao for your next journey, you step into a landscape of lush history, endangered life, and unforgettable serenity.

Starting October 20, travelers will have a new way to reach the surfing capital of the Philippines—Siargao Island—thanks to 2GO Travel’s launch of a Manila–Siargao Sea route.
The new service will be operated by the M/V Saint Francis Xavier, a passenger vessel with a capacity of 1,900 guests, offering a comfortable and scenic voyage across the Philippine seas. This development is set to boost connectivity and make Siargao more accessible not only to domestic tourists but also to international visitors flying into Manila.
Weekly Sailings and Affordable Fares
The Manila–Siargao trip will depart every Monday from Manila, arriving in Siargao the following day. The 28-hour journey offers travelers an affordable alternative to flights, with fares starting at just ₱2,000 for super mega value accommodations.
Whether you’re a budget-conscious backpacker or a family seeking a leisurely sea experience, this new ferry route presents an option that blends practicality with adventure.
Cruise-Like Comfort on Board
Far from being just a ferry, the Saint Francis Xavier brings a touch of cruise ship luxury to domestic sea travel. Onboard amenities include:
A salon and spa for relaxation at sea
Dining halls and a café serving a variety of meals
Souvenir stalls for travel mementos
Nightly entertainment, including a live band and karaoke rooms
An arcade for kids and the young at heart
A clinic for passenger safety and care
As Francis Chua, 2GO Travel’s business unit head, put it: “It’s like we are on an international cruise ship. World-class and would give comfort to our sea travelers.”
Passengers will even be welcomed with a Filipino cultural dance performance, showcasing the warm hospitality the Philippines is known for.
A Gateway to Siargao’s Wonders
For travelers, this new route unlocks easier access to Siargao’s famed attractions:
Cloud 9 Surfing Spot – world-renowned for its waves
Sugba Lagoon – turquoise waters perfect for paddleboarding
Magpupungko Rock Pools – tide-carved natural wonders
Island Hopping – from Naked Island to Daku and Guyam
Now, the journey to Siargao can be just as memorable as the destination itself.
Looking Ahead
While 2GO Travel is exploring more potential sea routes with the Philippine Ports Authority, MARINA, and the Philippine Coast Guard, for now the spotlight shines on the Manila–Siargao connection.
For travelers who enjoy slow travel, scenic sea journeys, and cultural immersion, this is a game-changer. Instead of rushing through an airport, you can watch sunsets at sea, enjoy live music on board, and arrive in Siargao refreshed and ready for adventure.
Plan your voyage today and experience Siargao in a whole new way — by sea.
