In June 1898, General Emilio Aguinaldo commissioned Cavite musician Julián Felipe to compose a march to accompany the declaration of independence from Spain. Named Marcha Nacional Filipina, the stirring piece was first performed during the proclamation at Aguinaldo’s home in Kawit on June 12, 1898. Often referred to as the Philippine Republic’s anthem, it set the stage for a new era.
